STREAMS, FISH & other AQUATIC CREATURES
In response to public interest, the RCML is hosting two outdoor education programs for adults. Thursday July 2nd at 5:15 we'll meet with Dan McKinley and Megan Payne of the U.S. Forest Service to learn about the inhabitants of our local streams, and stewardship of our natural resources. We'll search for and identify water bugs and salamanders, and using electrofishing gear we'll catch and identify native species in Michigan Brook.

WILDFLOWER IDENTIFICATION WALK
What are those amazing fuschia flowers in overgrown hayfields? Why all the fuss about Japanese Knotweed? Find out on July 9th at 5:15 when Aaron Marcus of the U.S. Forest Service will lead us on a 1.5 mile wildflower walk down to the Tweed river and across varied terrain to identify and discuss native and invasive plant species.

We have a new competitor for  Super Volunteer.  Traci Templeton did a great job organizing our first summer community picnic.  I would also like to thank J.R. from the Pitt Stop for donating burgers, the Blessing / Johnstone family for bringing the grill, Loren Mayer for handling summer reading program sign ups, Gary Mayer for running the grill, Becca Rubens for displaying the Puzzle Pieces, and of course Angelique for her fantastic graphics.

We had a great turn out.  Several of the adults checked out books from our new book shelf (lots of NYT and Independent Booksellers picks).  The kids spent time with sidewalk chalk and of course the playground.  Everyone enjoyed time with neighbors.

Stay tuned for news about a summer series of "field trips" for adults including a stream walk and wildflower and invasive species identification walk.

Young Adult Art Program a success

Jen Vaughn, a student at the Center for Cartoon Studies led 9 young adults in a project to create library related puzzle pieces for "Art Fits Vermont."
First she shared her experiences as a chld whose family moved around a lot, and in each new town finding the local library as a way to anchor herself to her new community. Jen set the kids off to explore discarded books and a variety of materials to create individual puzzle pieces based on their favorite books or library themes.
Becca Ruben and Sharon Mayer kept the day flowing smoothly with lunch and snacks. By 3pm beautiful puzzle pieces emerged, showcasing everyone's unique interpretation of books and the library in their lives. Look for their art to be on display at the upcoming Library Picnic.
