"Amid escalating clashes between protesters and police, discussing race—from the inequity embedded in American institutions to the United States’ long, painful history of anti-black violence—is an essential step in sparking meaningful societal change. To support those struggling to begin these difficult conversations, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture recently launched a “Talking About Race” portal featuring “tools and guidance” for educators, parents, caregivers and other people committed to equity."

Coming this month to your Library: "Imagine Your Story" Summer Reading Program! This summer is all about fairy tales--reading them, writing them, sharing them, and making cool stuff to imagine your own story! This program will, of course, look different than previous years, out of concern for the well-being of all of us. Maya the Librarian will read fairy tales each week on video. Families who register will receive instructions on how to safely pick up supplies and directions for fun crafts and activities, reading journals to decorate, fairy tales from our collection, info about Zoom gatherings for all the summer readers, AND details on some fun surprises! (Would you like to see the Librarian get SOAKED??? Sign up to learn how you can help make that happen!)
There is room in the program for 10 children, so sign up right away! Email Maya at pittsfieldvtlibrary@gmail.com or call during regular hours. Free. For ages up to 12. Check out Come Alive Outside whose mission is to “get people off the couch and back outside.” They offer several programs such as the 100 miles in 100 days, or the children’s passport that allows elementary students to earn points for outdoor activities. Supported by the Vermont Department of Health.
This is so cool! J.K. Rowling has written a new story!! Well, actually, she wrote it quite a long time ago, even before the end of that series she wrote, what's the name of it again? Harry Somebody? Ok, ok, I know her other stories! But she has just published this story...FOR FREE. Here is a link to her webpage, telling the story of the story:

It's being released in installments. https://www.theickabog.com/read-the-story/ As a huge fan of ol' Harry What's-his-Name, all I can say is....YAAAAY!! Here's a link to an article about ways to stay healthy and engaged while spending most, if not all, of our time at home. This comes from Harpreet Gujral, program director of integrative medicine at Sibley Memorial Hospital at Johns Hopkins University.

"Does the idea of becoming a citizen scholar sound intriguing? The Smithsonian has digital volunteer opportunities. For instance, "citizen scholars are invited to transcribe historic documents including diaries and working papers of prominent Americans," according to the Smithsonian website. To get involved, you can check out the Smithsonian Transcription Center." How cool is that? |
